Butterfly Light Sensor

Bye Bye Light Sensor - Hello Light Sensor

Due to ROHS, a European environmental edict, the Butterfly LDR (Light Dependent Resistor) was removed due to the presence of Cadmium.

You can find some discussion of this issue on www.avrfreaks.net at:

Compatible CdS light sensor for latest Butterfly?

New Butterfly has another resistor

Our Butterflies do not have the LDR. The Butterfly++ MiniKit and the Butterfly Carrier both have an LDR that can be soldered onto the Butterfly. See the assembly instructions for those products for details.

The original LDR was a: Silonex NSL 19M51 - with 20 to 100 kOhm light resistance

The replacement LDR is a: DigiKey PDV-P9005-1 48K-140K OHM light resistance

While these parts are not identical, the replacement will serve for the experiments used in the book. If you need an exact replacement, then you will need to find the Silonex part which we do not carry.
